SAYA Programs

SAYA (South Asian Youth Action) is a community-based organization founded in 1996 and has been serving Richmond Hill High School since 2007. With a focus on identity development, leadership building, and personal and career readiness, SAYA supports K–12 school sites across Brooklyn and Queens. Since 2014, SAYA has primarily partnered with Richmond Hill High School through the Community School initiative, enhancing the school by providing free, comprehensive wraparound services. These services include after-school clubs and trips, post-secondary success support, a wellness center, attendance intervention and success mentoring, access to community resources, special events and workshops, cafeteria activities, and more.

SAYA enriches student life by offering over 15 after-school clubs, supporting college and financial aid applications through Richmond Hill High School alumni, providing mentorship to more than 200 students, and assisting families with a variety of resources— including direct assistance grants, housing and immigration support, stipends, and more. Clubs have included Anime, Games, Debate, Fashion, Podcast, Siempre Unidos (Latinx Heritage), Chai & Chutney (South Asian, Indo-Caribbean Heritage), International Connections (new student community), Lionettes Dance, Rainbow Coalition (LGBTQIA), Software Engineering, The Creatives (Art), and The Page Turners (books), among others. SAYA also hosts special events celebrating diverse cultures and identities, such as AAPI + Indo-Caribbean Heritage Month, Black History Month, Diwali, Eid, Día de Los Muertos, Pride Fair, and more.

Wellness Center

The Child Center of New York’s (TCNNY) Wellness Center at RHHSoffers a wide range of wellness, social-emotional, and mental health supportat our school. In partnership with SAYA, and as part of the CommunitySchool initiative, it provides targeted, selective, and universal services.These include individual and family therapy, crisis counseling, groupworkshops, trainings for staff and families, classroom presentations, andlunchtime cafeteria initiatives. Staffed by a full team of clinicians, the centeroffers one-on-one support in a confidential environment.

Throughout the year, the team has organized a variety of initiatives such asLunchtime Wellness self-care and spa activities, engaging games, workshopson mindfulness, stress and time management, support for bilingual students,a mental health poster contest, events focused on men’s mental health, andworkshops for teachers and parents on supporting students.
