ACADEMY OF ART AND DESIGN



ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

  • Foundations Healthcore 1-  is an introductory course designed to prepare students to pursue a health career. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to identify careers in these fields, compare and contrast the features of healthcare systems, explain the legal and ethical ramifications of the healthcare setting, and begin to perform foundational healthcare skills. This course will serve as a strong foundation for all of the healthcare pathways in FutureReadyNYC. 
  • Foundations Healthcore 2- is a continuation of Foundations Healthcore 1 designed to prepare students to pursue a health career. 
  • Public Health- Basic principles of health administration and organization, background and development of public health; community health needs and resources; public health activities and personnel; international public health. Field trips may be required.

ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM

  • Principles of Hospitality and Tourism- This introductory lesson exposes students to some of the key terms and areas of knowledge that they will be studying throughout this course. They also learn about the skills they will develop that are crucial to the field of hospitality and tourism. Students probe their personal conceptions about hospitality and tourism by judging the accuracy of a variety of statements. They acquire a sense of the course objectives by looking at examples of culminating projects created by previous students, who developed vacation packages for high school students. Students also set up two course tools: a general taxonomy of key terms in hospitality and tourism, and a notebook that they will use throughout the course.

  • Career and Financial Management- Career and Financial Management is designed to promote financial literacy among young adults. Students will gain an understanding of and develop the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in a rapidly changing world. They will explore emerging workplace trends and develop employment skills, including resume writing and interviewing. Additional topics include maintaining a checkbook, understanding credit, insurance, and consumerism.

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PROGRAM


  • TEALS Introduction to Computer Science- This course serves as an introduction to computer science using block-based programming language (Scratch or SNAP!). Students create simple flowcharts and algorithms, utilizing abstraction, decomposition, and debugging processes. Students will complete 2 portfolio group projects – Pong game and Platform game. 
  • Exploring Computer Science- Students will be introduced to their first text-based programming language, Python. Using the ProjectSTEM curriculum, students will apply the computer science concepts they learned in 9th grade while coding in Python. Throughout the year, students will complete 2 portfolio projects, Silly Sentences and Even and Odd. At the end of the course, students will develop understanding of how to use variables, if statements, different data types, basic functions, and loops.
  • Functional Programming in Data Science- In this course students will learn to understand, ask questions of, and represent data through project-based units. The units will give students opportunities to be data explorers through active engagement, developing their understanding of data analysis, sampling, correlation/causation, bias and uncertainty, modeling with data, making and evaluating data-based arguments, and the importance of data in society. At the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of their data science work to showcase their newly developed knowledge and understanding.
AI and Machine Learning- This course introduces the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Students will be using code.org curriculum to go over the basics of AI/ML through a hands-on introduction to developing a machine learning model with tabular data. Students explore how computers learn from data to make decisions and develop machine learning projects around real-world data. The unit culminates in designing a machine learning app to solve a personally relevant problem, which will serve as a portfolio project.
