Physical Education & Health
New York State Law mandates students to attain seven semesters of physical education and one semester of health education with a sixty five percent passing rate for a high school diploma to be earned.
HEALTH EDUCATION Grades 10-12
This New York State mandated course provides the student with a knowledge base for making healthy lifestyle choices in our contemporary society. The course of study includes, but is not limited to: mental health, chemical use and abuse, family living and parenting education, and nutrition education. HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and safety education.
ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION
This course is a New York State mandated Physical Education program in which the medically-excused student participates in a variety of activities designed to meet his/her individual needs, interests, and abilities. The activities are suited to the capacities and limitations of students who are medically excused by a licensed medical physician.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CO-ED CLASSES Grades 10-11
All Physical Education classes begin with a vigorous warm up and calisthenics period. The students are engaged in activities throughout the year that encourage aerobic fitness, muscle tone and development. Sports and activities taught include, but are not limited to: fitness testing, basketball, volleyball, handball, soccer, project adventure, team handball, badminton, floor hockey, whiffleball and running.
This class is an introduction to basic weight training. This class will increase the student’s fitness especially strength. Preference in scheduling will go to juniors and seniors. Pre-requisite: students must be passing their regular physical education class.
FRESHMAN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Courses are single sex male/females. The first marking period is devoted to project adventure activities. The focus is on building trust, confidence, team building, communication skills, and problem solving skills. The second and third marking periods are devoted to a survey course which mimics activities students will participate in grades 10-12.
BEGINNER SWIMMING FRESHMAN
This class is an introduction to the basic skills of swimming. Students will learn the American Red Cross swimming skill necessary for them to feel comfortable in and around the water. This course prepares the students for the Intermediate Swimming class.
ADVANCED SWIMMER Grades 10-12
In this course students will develop enhances swimming techniques, improve swimming fitness and learn survival skills. Students will gain knowledge of elementary backstroke, side stroke and the four competitive swimming strokes, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
