Social Studies

The Social Studies Department uses New Visions and Passport for Social Studies as the basis for our 9th-12th grade curriculum, nurturing students’ close reading, text analysis, argumentation and writing skills to support success on the NYS Regents exams in Global History (10th grade) and United States History (11th grade). Seniors are enrolled in our Participation in Government and Economics courses, which infuse Project Based Learning and use the NYC Passport to Social Studies as the foundation for curriculum.

The department offers many opportunities to enroll in college level, Advanced Placement and honors classes, including AP World History, AP U.S. History, and AP Government, as well as college accredited courses with CUNY York, SUNY Farmingdale, St. John’s University, and Molloy College. We are a NYC Seal of Civic Readiness endorsed school, providing opportunities for graduates to earn a special  designation on their high school diploma. Through our Legal Studies pathway classes and after school Law Club, students compete in the Justice Resource Center’s Mock Trial and Young Debater’s Team competitions, earning valuable research, debate and public speaking skills.
